Microsoft Security Patch Advance Notification - December 2007
Microsoft have provided advanced notification of the patches that they expect to release with December's Security Patch Release. At this time, there are seven patches scheduled for release, three rated as Critical and four as Important.
The four Important patches are currently described as being for generic Windows issues, while the three Critical patches are for DirectX, Windows Media Format, and a cumulative Internet Explorer update.
There are a couple of interesting details that can be gleaned from the Microsoft notification, including the suggestion that DirectX may have a critical design fault (or faults), given that every version from DirectX 7.1 through to 10.0 (the latest version) is being patched through this month's patches. Anti-cheat gaming software that relies upon validating system configuration prior to online gaming sessions will need to be updated to address the system updates and allow for the holes that will exist in unpatched systems.
